IMU05-S for Vehicle Dynamics
The new IMU05-S allows Vehicle Dynamics Engineers to measure vehicle attitude with extreme accuracy in the quickest and simplest way possible.
The video above features footage from Julian Thomas, MD of RACELOGIC, testing his Cobra Daytona at Silverstone Circuit. It demonstrates how a racing tyre generates grip relative to slip angle. The car was equipped with a VBOX 3i and IMU05-S, receiving RTK corrections from a local base station to achieve 2cm positional accuracy around the entire circuit.
The recording was done using a VBOX Video HD2, which includes real-time graphic overlays of the track outline, speed gauge, and lap times. The graph in the middle was added during post-processing and shows a plot of lateral grip versus slip angle, with the black line representing the average values from the entire session.
New IMU05-S for Vehicle Dynamics
The new IMU05-S has been developed to allow Vehicle Dynamics Engineers to make extremely accurate vehicle attitude measurements in the quickest and simplest way possible.
Class-leading Gyro Stability
The IMU05-S uses the very latest in sensor technology to achieve a class leading bias stability of just 0.8 °/hr. For reference, our previous IMU04 had a bias stability of 10 °/hr, and competitive systems on the market are quoted as 2 °/hr.
Class-leading Low Gyro Noise
The noise levels on our latest offering are also much lower than our competitors, which translates into much more stable and repeatable measurements.
Below is an illustration of the velocity noise (top graph) and the "random walk" (drift) of the pitch and roll angles when the vehicle is stationary. The graph compares our product (in blue) with a competitor’s product (in red).
Fastest Initialisation Procedure
Thanks to comprehensive calibration and low noise, the VBOX 3i and IMU05-S require minimal initialization to achieve working accuracy. Only a simple acceleration and braking event are needed before you start testing. This allows you to pull onto a live test track and drive normally, without the need for numerous dynamic maneuvers in an open space, which is often required by competitive systems. This improvement significantly speeds up the start of testing and reduces the need for large track spaces, eliminating the need for multiple figure-eight maneuvers.
Example Use Case
A customer who regularly conducts competitive tyre analysis for manufacturers worldwide recently used a VBOX3i and IMU05S to assess the performance of various tyres at Idiada.
The primary advantage, evident from the data, is that the vehicle can be driven directly onto the test track without needing to perform repeated figure-eight manoeuvres in an open area. The data quickly reaches the required accuracy.
By separating out each lap, the consistency of the roll, pitch and slip angles can be seen by placing the cursor at a straight point on the track, and the examining the angles reported at the same point each time.
The slip angle when the car is in a straight line is consistently showing 0.55° – 0.6°, which corresponded to the road camber at that point.
The New IMU05
The IMU05's precise measurements of roll, pitch, and yaw rate are obtained through three high-precision gyroscopes with an industry-leading bias stability of 1.2 degrees per hour. For those who need more precision, we offer the S model, IMU05-S, which utilizes MEMS high-precision gyroscopes with an even lower bias stability of 0.8 degrees per hour.
