IMU Integration

VBOX 3i has the ability to utilise data from a RACELOGIC IMU and uses a Kalman Filter to improve all parameters measured in real-time. All captured data is processed at 100 Hz, improving accuracy / noise levels and enhancing the dynamic response to velocity.

IMU integration ensures accurate test results in areas of unreliable satellite reception, typically caused by trees, buildings and bridges.

The vehicle's attitude (pitch, roll and yaw angles) is also measured to a high accuracy without the need to use a dual antenna system (roll/pitch at 0.06° rms, Yaw at 0.5° rms). Dynamic overshoot is eliminated through lever arm correction.

The VBOX Test Suite software analysis package allows for a detailed examination of VBOX data, along with an intuitive interface that is accessible for all users from engineer to test driver.

VBOX Test Suite comes equipped with a set of test configurations, such as Brake testing, Aquaplane, Coast-down, Lane Change, Pass-By Noise, and so on.

The VBOX Test Suite Brake Testing plugin, for example, is designed so that engineers can conduct brake stop testing that conforms to regulations specified in all regions. The brake test plugin is configured to produce results based on speed to speed parameters or by a variety of alternative inputs such as trigger, brake pressure or position values.

Tests can be run within a tightly defined set of criteria, such as between temperature ranges. Centreline deviation is automatically calculated during each run, and thresholds can be applied to ensure that the operative gets immediate feedback on the validity of results.

The plugin also produces a comprehensive report that includes all the relevant test results along with the engineer's notes.

• 2x CAN Bus
  Two CAN Bus interfaces are available. The first CAN Bus connections allows data to be logged from RACELOGIC modules such as TC8 and FIM03. The second CAN Bus interface allows you to log up to 16 CAN signals from a different CAN source (e.g. Vehicle CAN Bus, laser height sensors, or steering wheel sensor). VBOX Tools analyisis software is able to load signal data from an industry standard CAN database file (.DBC).

  Brake / Event Trigger
  By using a physical pressure switch on the brake pedal, a precise 'start of braking event' can be captured. The brake/event trigger input is oversampled to 25 nS for high distance accuracy.
  Log Switch
  A start/stop logging switch allows users to manually choose when they wish to record data.
  
  
• 4x Analogue Inputs
  Each of the four analogue input channels have a dedicated 24 bit analogue converter. Data is recorded from each channel simultaneously to avoid latency between analogue channel data. The name, scale and offset of each analogue input channel can be adjusted using VBOX Tools software to allow sensor calibration and therefore logging of data in standard SI units. The analogue input connector also provides two power outputs that may be used for driving sensors. These are in the form of a 5 V DC isolated supply and an output equal to the VBOX power supply voltage. Log rates can be set to either 100 Hz or 500 Hz.
  
  
• Voice Tagging
  VBOX 3i can record a GPS synchronised WAV audio tag up to 30 seconds long to a time accuracy of 0.5 sec. The recorded WAV file is then logged to the CF card.
  
  
• Power Supply
  VBOX 3i can accept a supply voltage between 7-30 V DC. Low current consumption results in extended battery life.

Outputs

• CAN Bus
  One of the two VBOX CAN ports can be used to output VBOX GPS parameters plus any 12 channels from connected input modules or internal AD channels. The baud rate and CAN id's for these outputs are user configurable.
  
  
• RS232
  The RS232 connector is used for VBOX configuration and output of real-time GPS data. Provides the facility to connect to a radio telemetry system to offer PC monitoring of test data.
  
  
• USB
  VBOX 3i USB connector can be used for VBOX configuration and to output real-time data at 100 Hz to a PC.
  
  
• Bluetooth
  VBOX 3i comes equipped with an internal Bluetooth Radio allowing remote configuration and remote output of real-time GPS data to any Bluetooth capable PC or Data logger. The Bluetooth connection is capable of sending data at the full 100 Hz rate.
  
  
• 2x Digital Outputs
  The first digital output is assigned to 'Speed/Distance' with adjustable 'Pulses per Meter' setting, while the second output is a level switch output enabling users to select any one of the logged channels and assign it a threshold value, e.g. output high (5 V) when speed greater than 20 km/h.
  
  
• 2x Analogue Outputs
  Both 16 bit analogue outputs can be configured to output velocity (or other GPS parameters) for use by additional data logging equipment. The voltage output range is from 0 to 5 V DC with a resolution of 76 μV per bit.
  
  
• CF Card
  Data is logged in a space-delimited text format. Recording time dependent on flash card capacity, log frequency, number of channels and logging conditions. Approximately 29Mb per hour used when logging GPS data at 100 Hz; approx. 182 MB per hour total logging capacity. Please note only compact flash cards up to 32 GB capacity are supported.

VBOX Mini is a perfect tool for any vehicle testing department as you can carry out a large number of standard tests very simply, with results being shown in real-time.

VBOX Mini does not have vehicle CAN connectivity. If you need to connect to a vehicle's CAN Bus, please refer to our CAN enabled data loggers from the VBOX IISX or VBOX 3i range.

Performance Testing

Using the built in screen you can measure many different types of acceleration test, 0-60, 0-100, 0-100-0, 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile etc. There are also a number of configurable tests, making the unit extremely versatile.

The G-force screens showing your acceleration, braking or cornering force are updated 10 times a second and the maximums can be reset by pressing the RESET button. All of these performance tests are accurate to 0.1s and 0.1kmh as the unit comes with a full calibration certificate.

If you carry out lots of detailed performance tests on different cars, then the VBOX Mini is the right tool for the job, and is used by magazines, TV companies and test departments around the world.

Lap Timing

The VBOX Mini is one of the most powerful lap timers you can buy with the added benefit that you don't need to set up any external beacons.

Because the VBOX Mini knows where you are 10 times a second, you simply drive over the place where you want to set your start/finish line and press a button. It then calculates the direction you were travelling, and draws a virtual line in its memory at 90 degrees and 25m wide. From then on it knows where your lap starts and ends and instantly displays and records this lap time, accurate to 0.1s.

The VBOX Mini comes with a 99 lap memory and stores all laps on the SD card.

In addition there are 6 split lines that can be defined, and the speed at each of these virtual gates can be frozen to examine corner exit speed or apex speed, giving valuable and instant feedback for the driver from corner to corner.

There is also a separate finish line that can be defined so that you can use the VBOX Mini to time slalom runs or sprint courses with separate start & finish lines.

Speed Measurement

Like all other VBOXs, the VBOX Mini measures velocity using the doppler shift technique, which means that the speed output is very accurate. Included is a large speedometer, and also a speed averaging screen.

This is very useful for calibrating speedometers and also checking the speed of the vehicle between two points. The averaging process can be activated by hitting the OK button, by crossing a start line/split line or by using an external trigger (via the Mini Input Module.)

The VBOX Mini comes with a full calibration certificate which is generated on our state of the art GPS constellation simulator.

Analysis Software

The VBOX Mini is supplied with the complete VBOX Tools software package. VBOX Tools has been developed in conjunction with our customers over many years making it very powerful yet easy to use.

With VBOX Tools you can analyse acceleration tests, braking tests, compare and overlay files in the graph screen. You can setup a real-time test with multiple display windows showing g-force, speed, distance etc., alongside a customisable table of results.

You can use the software in real-time mode connected directly to a VBOX, or in post processing mode using the data stored on the removable flash card. For more information, please see the software page.

Circuit Tools software is also included if you are concentrating on driver training and track analysis.

The VBOX Test Suite software analysis package allows for a detailed examination of VBOX data, along with an intuitive interface that is accessible for all users from engineer to test driver.

Dedicated test plugin like ADAS include all three types of Euro NCAP tests: car-to-car rear stationary, car-to-car rear moving, and car-to-car rear braking (CCRs, CCRm, CCRb).

The NCAP protocol’s test parameters for AEB are hard-coded into the VBOX Test Suite software, and all the relevant channels are automatically created and logged during a test: subject and target vehicle speeds, relative distances between them, lateral deviation, yaw and steering wheel velocity.

This level of automation results in a significant reduction in post-processing work as well as the time already saved on track.

  VB3iSLR features a powerful GPS engine embracing two antennas and capable of providing 100 Hz signal up date rate for all GPS/GLONASS parameters (i.e. velocity, head ing & position). VBOX IISX Dual Antenna can be used for a number of different applications:

• Dynamic Tests
  Slip and pitch angles updated at 20Hz alongside speed, distance and acceleration.
• Steady State Cornering
  Slip angle without any drift or correction over time.
• Trailer Angles
  Measure relative angles between two fixed bodies (two systems needed).
• Brake testing
  Having a maximum update rate of 20Hz is still plenty fast enough for brake testing, you don’t quite get the phenomenal ±1.8cm resolution of the VBOX 3i, but for many purposes the ±10cm achieved is more than adequate. The VBOX IISX has a high speed brake trigger input, which scans for a braking event 100,000 times a second.
• Performance testing

• 2x GPS Antennas
  By utilising two GPS engines configured in a 'fixed baseline RTK setup', true heading, yaw rate, lateral and longitudinal velocity, slip angle and pitch angle can be measured, (slip is measured at the point at which you place the main reference antenna. This can be translated to any point on the vehicle in post processing). How does it work?
• CAN Bus
  Data can be logged from external modules e.g. the Thermocouple Interface or the Frequency & Pulse Counter Input Module. Up to 16 CAN signals can also be logged from a different CAN source (e.g. Vehicle CAN Bus). When logging data from another source, VBOX Tools can load signal data from an industry standard CAN database file (.DBC).
• Brake Trigger
  By using a physical switch on the brake pedal, a precise 'start of braking event' can be captured. This is required to capture true Stopping Distance to the accuracy quoted.
• Power Supply
  VBOX IISX can accept a supply voltage between 6 to 30v DC. Low current consumption results in extended battery life.

  By utilising spare CAN Bus connections VBOX GPS can transmit data while logging readouts from external module inputs.
  
  
• RS232/ USB
  RS232 connector is used for VBOX configuration and output of real-time GPS data. A USB port is also present giving the same functionality for PC’s with USB sockets.
  
  
• 2x Digital Outputs
  Both digital outputs can be configured to output velocity (or other GPS parameters) for use by additional data logging equipment.
  
  
• 2x Analogue Outputs

  Accepts most types of SD card. Data is stored in a standard PC format allowing fast transfer of data to a PC equipped with a SD card reader. The file format is an ASCII text file that can be loaded directly onto VBOX Tools software, or imported into Excel and other third party software.

• 100 Hz GPS / GLONASS Engine
  VB3iSLR features a powerful GPS engine embracing two antennas and capable of providing 100 Hz signal up date rate for all GPS/GLONASS parameters (i.e. velocity, heading & position). Velocity and heading are calculated via Doppler Shift in the GPS carrier signal, providing you with unparalleled data accuracy.
  
  
• 2x GPS/GLONASS Antennas
  All standard parameters like time, speed, distance, and position are measured at the primary antenna. The secondary antenna enables logging of additional channels like slip angle, pitch or roll angle (depending on antenna orientation).
  
  
• 2x CAN Bus
  Two CAN Bus interfaces are available. The first CAN Bus connections allows data to be logged from external RACELOGIC modules such as TC8 and FIM03. The second CAN Bus interface allows you to log up to 16 CAN signals from a different CAN source (e.g. Vehicle CAN Bus, laser height sensors, or steering wheel sensor). VBOX Tools analyisis software is able to load signal data from an industry standard CAN database file (.DBC).
  
  
• Brake Trigger
  By using a physical pressure switch on the brake pedal, a precise 'start of braking event' can be captured. The brake/event trigger input is oversampled to 25nS for high distance accuracy.
  
  
• Log Switch
  A start/stop logging switch allows users to manually choose when they wish to record data.
  
  
• 4x Analogue Inputs
  Each of the four analogue input channels have a dedicated 24bit analogue converter. Data is recorded from each channel simultaneously to avoid latency between analogue channel data. The name, scale and offset of each analogue input channel can be adjusted using VBOX Tools software to allow sensor calibration and therefore logging of data in standard SI units. The analogue input connector also provides two power outputs that may be used for driving sensors. These are in the form of a 5v DC isolated supply and an output equal to the VBOX power supply voltage. Log rates can be set to either 100 Hz or 500 Hz.
  
  
• Voice Tagging
  VBOX 3i can record a GPS synchronised WAV audio tag up to 30 seconds long to a time accuracy of 0.5 sec. The recorded WAV file is then logged to the CF card.
  
  
• Power Supply
  VBOX 3i can accept a supply voltage between 7 to 30V DC. Low current consumption results in extended battery life.

• CAN Bus
  One of the two VBOX CAN ports can be used to output VBOX GPS parameters plus any 12 channels from connected input modules or internal AD channels. The baud rate and CAN id's for these outputs are user configurable.
  
  
• RS232
  The RS232 connector is used for VBOX configuration and output of real-time GPS data. Provides the facility to connect to a radio telemetry system to offer PC monitoring of test data.
  
  
• USB
  VBOX 3i USB connector can be used for VBOX configuration and to output real-time data at 100 Hz to a PC.
  
  
• Bluetooth
  VBOX 3i comes equipped with an internal Bluetooth Radio allowing remote configuration and remote output of real-time GPS data to any Bluetooth capable PC or Data logger. The Bluetooth connection is capable of sending data at the full 100 Hz rate.
  
  
• 2x Digital Outputs
  The first digital output is assigned to 'Speed/Distance' with adjustable 'Pulses per Meter' setting, while the second output is a level switch output enabling users to select any one of the logged channels and assign it a threshold value, e.g. output high (5 V) when speed greater than 20 km/h.
  
  
• 2x Analogue Outputs
  Both 16 bit analogue outputs can be configured to output velocity (or other GPS parameters) for use by additional data logging equipment. The voltage output range is from 0 to 5v DC with a resolution of 76 μV per bit.
  
  
• CF Card
  Data is logged in a space-delimited text format. Recording time dependent on flash card capacity, log frequency, number of channels and logging conditions. Approximately 29Mb per hour used when logging GPS data at 100 Hz; approx. 182 Mb per hour total logging capacity. Please note that only compact flash cards up to 32 GB are supported.
